French officials have consented to start intercepting migrant vessels in the English Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the UK.

This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the President asking him to back the initiative and saying there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.

French security forces will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to official confirmation.

French authorities have rarely intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both officers and civilians.

"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."

Currently, a French maritime police representative states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.

Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.

This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister departed from government.

That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when French police were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.

Currently French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats before they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.

Powerful gusts are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking ways to adjust to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.

UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
