"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The sender also wants to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are not alone. Several famous fans have publicly coveted the position.

It's clear a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy contenders.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos repeatedly depict them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to form a group."

"So all are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Award Nod

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes follow endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That newfound confidence demanded a new sound – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Camaraderie

The band's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

One man ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide following.

But the band will forever be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
